Tasting note
Colour & appearance
An intense, medium gold-yellow fills the glass – luminous and dense, with a shimmer that already hints at the ripeness of the fruit and the maturation in wooden casks.
Nose
A beguiling, almost feminine bouquet: ripe pear and apricot meet the delicate piquancy of orange zest. Beneath these lie layers of freshly churned butter, vanilla and praline, flanked by a touch of leather and the roasted sweetness of café au lait. Fragrant floral notes hover above, lending the wine a seductive, complex depth.
Palate
Juicy and compact, yet playful and of remarkable finesse. A salty, taut thread runs through the wine with intensity, giving it drive and length. The balance between ripe fruit and firm acidity makes it accessible even now – after sufficient aeration, it shows itself at its very best.
Finish
Long and precise, with persistent salty freshness and an echo of citrus and toasted nuts. The structure points to excellent ageing potential.
Terroir & origin
The plot “En Chanelet” is located in the village of Igé in southern Burgundy. Here the vines grow on fertile limestone, facing west at an altitude of 230 metres – an exposure that provides optimal ripening conditions thanks to the late afternoon sun. The 40- to 80-year-old vines are deeply rooted and yield concentrated, characterful grapes.
Grape variety & vinification
Pure Chardonnay, harvested on 17 September 2024. Brothers Jean-Philippe and Jean-Guillaume Bret vinify the wine in their own cellar at Domaine La Soufrandière: 100 per cent spontaneous fermentation in barrique, only minimally sulphured. This careful craftsmanship preserves the liveliness of the fruit and gives the wine its silky texture.
Food recommendations
A wine for the dinner table: rich sauces and highly spiced dishes are ideal partners. It shines alongside pan-fried sole fillet with beurre blanc, coq au vin blanc, truffle risotto or roast chicken with morel cream sauce. Also a revelation with mature Comté.
Special features
Only 2,706 bottles were produced of this single-vineyard Chardonnay – a rarity from the Mâconnais that demonstrates the outstanding quality the Bret Brothers achieve even beyond their Beaujolais crus. The combination of old vines, western exposure and gentle maturation results in a wine of rare density and expressiveness.
