Wine Description for Enkircher Ellergrub Riesling Spätlese 2023 by Weiser-Künstler
- Colour & Appearance
- Silvery-shimmering lemon yellow with bright reflections and green elements – a wine that already reveals its youthful freshness and clarity in the glass.
- Nose
- Playful, energetic aromatics that take their time: lemon zest, grapefruit and bergamot form the tart foundation, complemented by a hint of nashi pear. Remarkable is the intense herbal component with bronze fennel, lemon balm, lemongrass and mint. The classic slate minerality and wet stones are unmistakable – a wine that cannot deny its origins.
- Palate
- Here the full class of a classic Mosel Spätlese reveals itself: the delicate sweetness (67 g/l residual sugar) dances elegantly across the palate, carried by a racy acidity structure (8.5 g/l) that builds considerable tension. The fruit remains pale and restrained, the citric components elemental. Saline and bitter notes lend complexity and depth. At 8.5% alcohol, the wine unites power and elegance with a lightness that tempts you to keep drinking.
- Finish
- Seemingly endless, yet light-footed and invigorating. The slate resonates, the acidity carries the aromas far, without ever becoming heavy.
- Terroir & Origin
- The terraced steep vineyard site Enkircher Ellergrub is home to ungrafted vines with an average age of over 100 years. They are rooted in blue, hard slate with quartz inclusions – a terroir that manifests itself in every sip. The ancient vines now yield only 15 hl/ha, resulting in extraordinary concentration.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 2023 was a warm, humid year that required meticulous hand-harvesting. Only 500 litres of this Spätlese were produced. Fermented and aged in stainless steel, the wine preserves its crystalline purity and precision.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Pan-fried char with herb butter, scallops with fennel cream, Thai curry with coconut milk, goat’s cheese of medium maturity or apple tart with vanilla ice cream. The low alcohol content makes it an ideal summer wine or aperitif.
- Special Features
- An absolute rarity: only 500 litres from ungrafted vines over 100 years old. A wine that already enchants now, but with its ageing potential will gain further depth and honeyed notes in the coming years.
