Wine description for Savigny-Les-Beaune 1er Cru „Les Lavières“ rouge 2017 by Chandon de Briailles
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous, medium cherry red with youthful transparency – a classic Burgundy dress that already announces the elegance of the vintage in the glass.
- Nose
- The nose seduces with a round, almost opulent fruit fullness: sugared raspberries and ripe, crushed wild berries form the core, underpinned by a fine lactic component that lends the wine a silky warmth. Beneath this shimmer damp forest floor and undergrowth, whilst a delicate floral note – rose petals, violets – and a hint of fresh chalk impart finesse and depth to the whole.
- Palate
- On the palate, the Les Lavières 2017 reveals itself as juicy and supple, with that lactic softness already hinted at on the nose. The fruit – once again the sugared wild berries – unfolds broad and inviting, supported by a deliberately restrained acidity. With air and time, the wine gains noticeably in power, freshness and tannin structure: after about an hour of decanting, it stands in full bloom, composed and in perfect balance. A wine that already brings pleasure today, yet also possesses potential for further years.
- Finish
- Medium length, juicy and berry-fruited, with a pleasant mineral aftertaste and fine, silky tannins. A harmonious, inviting conclusion without excessive austerity.
- Terroir & Origin
- The vineyard site Les Lavières lies in the northern part of Savigny-lès-Beaune, towards Pernand-Vergelesses. The soil combines sandstone, sand and marl with iron-rich oolite in the upper layer, as well as reddish-brown, crumbly limestone deeper down – a terroir that inscribes structure and mineral spice into the wine. Chandon de Briailles manages 2.61 hectares in the heart of this 17.66 hectare Premier Cru.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Pinot Noir from approximately 50-year-old vines with south-south-easterly exposure. The moderate alcohol of 12.5% vol. reflects the Burgundian philosophy of elegance and terroir expression, far removed from any overripeness.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Ideal with calf’s liver and wild mushrooms on toasted bread with port wine reduction, with ravioli with various game and porcini mushrooms or the surprisingly harmonious combination of sautéed La Ratte potatoes with figs, porcini mushrooms, chestnuts and wild rocket.
- Special Features
- Compared to its sibling wine Aux Fournaux, the Les Lavières presents itself as the darker, more masculine character – a wine with greater substance and depth, one that rewards patience and embodies the true spirit of Savigny-lès-Beaune.
