Wine Description for Roero Loreto Riserva DOCG 2022 by Valfaccenda

Character

The Roero Loreto Riserva DOCG 2022 by Valfaccenda represents a remarkable interpretation of the Arneis grape – a rarity in the world of Riserva white wines. Whilst the Roero region is primarily known for its Nebbiolo red wines, this wine demonstrates the extraordinary potential that Arneis can develop with extended ageing. At 14.0% vol., this wine presents itself powerfully and concentrated, without losing the characteristic elegance of the variety.

Terroir and Origin

The Roero lies on the left bank of the Tanaro, opposite the more renowned Barolo and Barbaresco zone. The sandy, calcareous soils with high mineral content lend the wines a particular finesse and salinity. Valfaccenda manages vineyards in the Loreto vineyard site, where the maritime microclimate and elevation create ideal conditions for the Arneis grape. The DOCG classification for Roero Arneis underscores the quality of this often underestimated Piedmontese specialty.

Winemaking Philosophy

That Valfaccenda creates a Riserva from Arneis demonstrates courage and conviction. Whilst most Arneis wines are enjoyed young and fresh, this producer commits to extended ageing – whether in barrel or bottle. This decision allows the grape to develop complexity and depth that far exceed the typical pear and almond aromas. The 2022 vintage benefited from a warm yet balanced growing season in Piedmont.

Food Pairing Recommendations

A wine of this structure and power demands appropriately substantial accompaniment. It harmonises perfectly with Risotto ai funghi porcini, aged cheeses such as Castelmagno or sautéed seafood. It also reveals its full potential alongside veal in cream sauce or Piedmontese tajarin with truffle. The serving temperature should be 10-12°C to bring the balance between freshness and richness into optimal focus.
