Wine description for Beatrice Boschis Barolo Chinato 500ml by Chiara Boschis – E.Pira & Figli

Character
Barolo Chinato is no ordinary wine speciality, but an aromatised Barolo creation deeply rooted in Piedmontese tradition. This historic liqueur speciality combines the power of Nebbiolo with the bitterness of cinchona bark and a bouquet of spices and herbs. Under Chiara Boschis, who leads the renowned E. Pira & Figli estate in Barolo, this ancient recipe is treated with the same care as her legendary Barolo wines. The result is a complex, spicy digestif of 18% alcohol that unites tradition and artisanal excellence.
Terroir & Origin
The foundation is Barolo DOCG from the hills of the Langhe, where Nebbiolo develops its unique structure on calcareous marl soils. Chiara Boschis manages some of the finest vineyard sites in Barolo, including the famous Cannubi cru. The E. Pira & Figli estate, founded in 1981, stands for uncompromising quality and respectful vineyard work. Chinato production follows old family recipes passed down through generations – an authentic piece of Piedmontese wine culture.
Grape variety & Vinification
The foundation is Nebbiolo, Piedmont’s temperamental noble grape, which here as a finished Barolo is macerated with cinchona bark, cloves, cinnamon, coriander and other botanicals. The high residual sugar content balances the natural tannin structure of Nebbiolo and the bitterness of cinchona bark. This historic preparation method was originally intended as a medicinal tonic, but developed into an esteemed speciality for special occasions. The 500ml bottle underscores the special character of this product.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Barolo Chinato is traditionally enjoyed as a digestif after opulent meals, ideally lightly chilled at 14-16°C. Classically it pairs with dark chocolate, Panna Cotta or Zabaione. In Piedmont it is often served with hazelnut biscuits or Amaretti. It also harmonises wonderfully with aged cheese such as Castelmagno. Some appreciate it neat as a contemplative sipping experience by the fireside.
