Wine Description for Beatrice Boschis Barolo Chinato 500ml by Chiara Boschis – E.Pira & Figli

Character
Barolo Chinato is no ordinary bottle of wine, but a Piedmontese speciality with deep historical roots. Chiara Boschis of E. Pira & Figli interprets this tradition with the same care she devotes to her classic Barolos. The foundation is aged Barolo, enriched with sugar, alcohol and a secret blend of herbs and cinchona bark. The result: an aromatised, sweet liqueur wine with 18% alcohol that combines the power of Nebbiolo with spicy complexity and balsamic notes. A digestif of remarkable elegance and depth.
Terroir & Origin
The E. Pira & Figli estate is among the historic producers in Barolo, with roots dating back to the 19th century. Under the direction of Chiara Boschis, who has led the small family winery since 1990, it has developed into one of the region’s most respected addresses. The Nebbiolo grapes come from the calcareous marl soils of the Langhe, those hills that give Barolo its distinctive structure and longevity. The Barolo Chinato preserves this Piedmontese artisanal tradition, once valued as a tonic and medicine.
Grape Variety & Vinification
The foundation is Nebbiolo, that demanding grape variety which gives Barolo its legendary tannin structure and ageing potential. For the Chinato, aged Barolo is macerated with cinchona bark, spices and herbs – typically cardamom, cinnamon, cloves and rhubarb – and enriched with sugar. This centuries-old recipe transforms the majestic red wine into a complex, bittersweet liqueur that captures the essence of Piedmont in concentrated form.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Barolo Chinato is the classic digestif after an opulent Piedmontese meal. Excellent with dark chocolate, particularly high cocoa content varieties, or with chocolate desserts. Traditionally it is also served with cheese, especially aged Parmigiano Reggiano or Gorgonzola. Lightly chilled at 14-16°C it reveals its aromatic complexity at its best. Some enjoy it neat as a meditative end to the evening.
