Wine Description for Beatrice Boschis Barolo Chinato 500ml by Chiara Boschis – E.Pira & Figli

Character
Barolo Chinato is no ordinary wine specialty, but a historic liqueur creation deeply rooted in Piedmontese tradition. Chiara Boschis interprets this heritage with the precision and care one expects from E. Pira & Figli – an estate known for its uncompromising quality and traditional craftsmanship. The Chinato combines the power of Nebbiolo with the aromatic complexity of cinchona bark and spices, resulting in an intense, spicy digestif with 18% alcohol and pronounced sweetness.
Terroir & Origin
Piedmont, more precisely the Barolo zone, provides the foundation: Nebbiolo wine from one of Italy’s most prestigious wine regions. The calcareous marl soils of Langhe and the continental climate with its misty autumn mornings shape the character of Nebbiolo, which serves as the base here. At E. Pira & Figli, located in Barolo itself, this territorial authenticity combines with a family tradition stretching back to the 19th century.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Barolo Chinato is created through the aromatisation of Barolo wine with cinchona bark (chinotto), spices, herbs and added sugar. This tradition was originally developed for medicinal purposes and has evolved into an esteemed digestif. The Nebbiolo base brings its typical tannin structure and acidity, which is balanced by the sweetness and bitter notes of the cinchona bark. The result is a complex interplay of dark fruits, cloves, cinnamon and a characteristic bitterness.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Barolo Chinato is the classic companion to dark chocolate, particularly with high cocoa content. Also an excellent choice with chocolate desserts, Panna Cotta or Zabaione. In Piedmontese tradition, it is also served with aged cheeses such as Castelmagno, or simply enjoyed neat as a meditative conclusion to an opulent meal.
