Wine description for Riesling „vom grauen Schiefer“ 2024 by Clemens Busch

Character
Clemens Busch is among the pioneering biodynamic winemakers on the Mosel and has fundamentally shaped the understanding of terroir-driven Rieslings. His „vom grauen Schiefer“ is the entry-level line of the estate, yet the term „entry“ is misleading: here we already see the uncompromising philosophy of the house. With moderate 11% alcohol and dry orientation, this Riesling embodies the elegance and precision for which Busch is internationally appreciated. It is a wine that places provenance above technique.
Terroir & Origin
The grey Devonian slate of the Mosel is more than mere geology – it is the soul of these wines. These ancient, weathered soils store heat, reflect light and force the vines to root deeply. The result: mineral tension and crystalline clarity. Pünderich, where the Busch estate is located, lies in the Terrace Mosel with its spectacularly steep vineyard sites. The cool-continental climate of the region preserves the acidity structure, whilst the slate slopes provide physiological ripeness – a balance that makes Mosel Riesling unmistakable.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Riesling from the Mosel is the benchmark for the variety worldwide. Busch works according to Demeter standards, eschews herbicides and synthetic fertilisers, relies on spontaneous fermentation and minimal intervention in the cellar. The wines mature on the lees, which gives them texture and depth without obscuring the varietal clarity characteristic of the grape. The dry style underscores the philosophy: Riesling need not be sweet to demonstrate greatness. Here the terroir speaks, not the cellar.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The versatility of this Riesling is remarkable. It accompanies sushi and sashimi as confidently as pan-fried river fish or scallops. The acidity structure harmonises with goat’s cheese and salads with citrus vinaigrette. It also demonstrates its strength with Asian cuisine featuring ginger and coriander or mildly spiced Thai dishes. A wine for the table, not for the cabinet.
