Wine information
The name derives from the affiliation to the former Cistercian convent Gottesthal. The soil has calcareous loess with iron oxide, clay marl and quartzite. It was deposited here at 160 m HNH as a "primeval beach" millions of years ago. The plots are moderately steep with a slope of about 15 to 20 % exposed to the south-south-west.
Information on the expansion
100 % Hand harvest, gentle whole cluster pressing, spontaneous fermentation with the natural yeasts, 16 months on the full lees in large wooden barrels.
Color
Sparkling golden yellow with green reflections.
Nose
The 2019 Östricher Klosterberg Riesling Erste Lage pleasantly tickles and provokes the nose. You can't smell acidity, right, but here you get the feeling that it is possible after all. Lots of wild herbs combine with apple and lemon zest. A hint of sea breeze, seaweed and green asparagus complete its extremely precise and brilliant fragrance.
Palate
Attack on the palate - the acidity makes the saliva flow and an invigorating minerality in the form of salty impressions settles on the tongue. You don't want to let go of this bottle and empty it. The aftertaste is fascinating with tart grapefruit notes and lots of spice. A great food companion and a wine with fantastic ageing potential.
