As far as the fruit is concerned, it remains discreetly in the background, only flashing through here and there. The Frauenberg lives from its phenolic character, from herbal spicy and herbaceous notes such as coriander seeds, curry leaves and liquorice.

Wine Description for Riesling Frauenberg Grosses Gewächs 2017 1500ml by Battenfeld-Spanier

Colour & Appearance
A clear, medium straw yellow with vibrant reflections.
Nose
This Riesling demands attention and time. Initially, it displays a striking, almost wild note of yeast and a hint of oxidation, reminiscent of artisanal sour beer. With air, however, the deep terroir spice unfolds: coriander seeds, curry leaves and a touch of liquorice dominate. The fruit remains aristocratically restrained, with fine accents of lemon, peach and apricot.
Palate
On the palate, the Frauenberg presents itself uncompromisingly taut and characterised by gripping phenolics. The razor-sharp acidity creates a wide arc of tension, filled by citric notes, wet stone and cool minerality. Added to this are hints of light tobacco and red berry herbs, which lend the wine additional structure.
Finish
An impressively long, vibrant finale, carried by lively minerality and the austere grip of limestone.
Terroir & Origin
Grown on pure limestone rock in an exposed vineyard site at 250 metres elevation. The extremely deep-rooting vines defy heat and wind, resulting in this unique, austere precision.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Excellent with steamed zander with ginger, Faroese salmon with yuzu and seaweed, or a robust goat’s cheese with cardamom and honey.
Special Features
In the 1500ml magnum bottle, this biodynamically produced wine shows even greater potential. It is at the beginning of its development and benefits enormously from decanting or further cellar ageing.
