Wine Description for Ried Käferberg Grüner Veltliner 1.ÖTW DAC 2022 by Loimer
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous, rich straw yellow with golden reflections – a wine that already signals its concentration and maturity visually.
- Nose
- Generously and multi-layered, a bouquet unfolds of yellow apples, quinces and honeydew melon, complemented by candied apricots. The classic white pepper note of Grüner Veltliner is accompanied by fine citrus and cedarwood nuances. Oregano and subtle lactic notes lend additional complexity and depth to the aromatic profile.
- Palate
- The attack surprises with impressive juiciness and density. A creamy, almost viscous texture nestles against the palate, carried by solid pressure and considerable extract. The stone fruit is underpinned by saline, almost lard-like notes – a play between opulence and finesse. The peppery spice returns, accompanied by herbal notes and a cool minerality that lends the wine structure and tension.
- Finish
- Long, mineral-cool and characterised by fine spice. The aftertaste shows respectable length with lingering citrus and herbal nuances.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Ried Käferberg in the Kamptal is a wind-protected south-facing site between 310 and 345 metres elevation. The geological patchwork of ancient crystalline rocks such as amphibolites, gneisses and mica schists, interspersed with younger clay marl and sands, lends the wine its characteristic complexity and mineral precision.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Hand-harvested Grüner Veltliner with 24-hour skin contact, spontaneously fermented in large oak barrels (1,250 and 2,500 litres). After four weeks of fermentation, eleven months of ageing on full lees in wood, followed by a further eight months on fine lees in steel tank. Bottled unfiltered in August 2024 – a wine that has been given time.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- The combination of creaminess and spice makes this Veltliner ideal for pan-fried char, veal schnitzel with potato salad, asparagus with hollandaise sauce or aged alpine cheese. Also an excellent choice with risotto with porcini mushrooms.
- Special Features
- A First Growth wine according to ÖTW classification, which impressively embodies Fred Loimer’s philosophy: biodynamic viticulture, artisanal precision and patient ageing for maximum terroir expression.
