Wine Description for Pouilly-Fuissé Climat 1er Cru „Au Vignerais“ AOC 2022 from La Soufrandière
- Colour & Appearance
- Intensely luminous, pale golden yellow – a wine that already promises maturity and concentration on the eye.
- Nose
- Sensual and powerful at once. Ripe yellow citrus fruits dominate, accompanied by salted lemon, lanolin, soured cream and fine biscuit notes. An aromatic palette that elegantly combines creaminess and freshness.
- Palate
- Here the true class of this Premier Cru reveals itself. Complex, deep and carried by vibrant tension that makes itself felt on the tip of the tongue from the very first moment. The texture is creamy, yet the fresh lemon notes remain present and appetising. Chalky and iodine nuances lend the wine mineral depth. Wonderfully balanced between maturity and freshness, between power and elegance.
- Finish
- Long, tension-filled and characterised by lingering citric freshness. The mineral notes resonate long afterwards.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Climat Au Vignerais lies on the south-facing slope of the legendary Roche de Solutré at 310 metres altitude. The 35-year-old Chardonnay vines are rooted in iron-rich red clay and limestone from the Bajocian period – a geological formation that gives the wine its distinctive minerality and structure. The parcel comprises just 0.49 hectares.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Chardonnay, hand-harvested on 27 August 2022. Whole-bunch pressing and spontaneous fermentation, followed by 17 months ageing in barrels aged seven to 18 years. Complete malolactic fermentation, neither fined nor filtered. With just 37 mg/l total sulphur and a pH of 3.50, a wine that embodies purism and artisanal precision.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- The saline minerality and creamy texture harmonise perfectly with dim sum with prawns, coriander and roasted chilli, dim sum with pork belly and pointed cabbage or tofu smoked with white tea and wild broccoli. Also a revelation with oysters, scallops or creamy risottos.
- Special Characteristics
- A Premier Cru that fully lives up to its status. The Bret brothers of La Soufrandière practise uncompromising natural winemaking and create wines of impressive authenticity and ageing potential.
