Wine Description for Riesling Lenchen Kabinett VDP Grosse Lage 2023 by Peter Jakob Kühn
- Colour & Appearance
- Clear straw yellow with pale greenish reflections – youthful, brilliant and of crystalline clarity.
- Nose
- Restrained, yet of striking elegance. The aromatics reveal themselves subtly and bright: Meyer lemon with its zest, lime and fresh lemon juice dominate initially. Nashi pear and vineyard peach provide juicy counterpoints. Impressive is the herbal depth: chervil, lemon balm, thyme and sage evoke a freshly mown herb garden. Nettle extract and sencha tea lend additional complexity. Stony, precise, uncompromisingly clear.
- Palate
- With only 9.5% alcohol, this Kabinett proves that greatness has nothing to do with power. Slender and fine-boned, yet with delightful drinking appeal. The 28.4 g/l residual sugar is perfectly balanced by taut 8.4 g/l acidity – the result is juicy, never sticky, always invigorating. The acidity doesn’t cut, but rather structures elegantly and creates tension. A wine that conveys well-being and generosity without losing its cool Rheingau precision.
- Finish
- Persistently fresh with citrus-driven minerality. The herbal notes linger, the acidity remains present and invites the next sip.
- Terroir & Origin
- From the VDP.Grosse Lage Oestricher Lenchen, directly behind the winery at 120-170 metres elevation. The westward-facing parcel (12-15% slope) stands on fertile, gravelly loess, interspersed with iron-rich quartzites and clay marl – formerly called „Eiserberg“. The Lenchen stream creates autumn mists that favour botrytis development – ideal for noble character Prädikatsweine.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Riesling from Peter Jakob Kühn, one of the most consistent biodynamic winemakers in the Rheingau. The wine exemplifies how modern Kabinett style works: precise, invigorating, with noble botrytis influence.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Pan-fried char with herb butter, asparagus with hollandaise sauce, Thai curry with coconut milk, goat’s cheese of medium maturity, apple strudel or simply as a solo on the terrace on a spring evening.
- Special Features
- A masterclass in Kabinett style: low alcohol, high acidity, moderate sweetness – and yet of compelling elegance. Peter Jakob Kühn’s biodynamic approach manifests itself in the clarity and precision of this wine.
