Wine Description for Riesling „Fürst“ Limited Edition 2023 by Barnert & Drewitz
- Colour & Appearance
- Medium straw yellow in the glass – a Riesling that already hints at its natural origins and maturation on full lees through its visual presentation.
- Nose
- Fascinatingly complex and unconventional. The Fürst oscillates between reductive and oxidative notes – a tension that awakens curiosity. Aromas of stone dust and wet rock with lichens meet fresh apple, must apple and pear. Interspersed are flashes of mandarin zest, a hint of graphite and that peculiar, almost Jurassic note reminiscent of the sweet smell of snap caps. A Riesling that polarises and demands engagement.
- Palate
- Here the true class reveals itself: saline, juicy, silky – a wine that immediately makes you crave the next sip. The fruit of fresh and mellow pome fruit appears wrapped in silk and cream, whilst the granite-marked acidity is ripe and perfectly integrated, providing pace and drinking flow. The seven-month maturation on full lees bestows substance upon the wine, that characteristic salinity and a fine, barely perceptible sweetness. A complete, multi-layered Riesling with character.
- Finish
- Medium to long, with persistent mineral freshness and a lingering echo of stone fruit and citrus zest. The acidity carries through to the end and leaves an invigorating, slightly saline impression.
- Terroir & Origin
- From an old vineyard on the western slope of the Odenwald near the renowned Fürstenlager site. The soil of weathered granite grus with slate bands fundamentally shapes the wine – you taste the stone in every sip.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Riesling, hand-harvested, 2.5 hours pressing, moderate sedimentation over 48 hours. Spontaneous fermentation in used 500-litre tonneaux, seven months on full lees. Bottled unfiltered with only 44 mg/l total SO₂ – a wine made with minimal intervention.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Perfect with grilled monkfish, scallops with herb butter, calf’s sweetbread or creamy goat’s cheese. Also an excellent choice with smoked trout or asparagus with Hollandaise sauce.
- Special Features
- An uncompromising, artisanally crafted Riesling that combines natural wine philosophy with classical elegance. The Limited Edition demonstrates what the Hessische Bergstraße can achieve when given the trust it deserves.
