Wine
Nikolaihof, Grüner Veltliner, Im Weingebirge Smaragd 2006, Wachau, 13,5 %
Color
golden yellow with white edges
Nose
A large jar of chestnut honey forms the base note of this matured Smaragd, which bristles with opulence and ripeness, although thankfully one never has the feeling of a "»Zuviel", as can otherwise occasionally happen with mature Wachauers. Wax, nuts and buttered toast round out the lavish nose, with a slight earthy, stony note always resonating in the background.
Palate
What a rich, almost creamy wine! Yellow ripe fruit in abundance, dried fruit, again the honey and a breath of Botrytis dresses itself in a creamy and above all stoffige texture, which makes quite full - but in moderation. Because nothing is exuberant on the palate. Everything is where it belongs, especially the acidity, which ensures the clarity of the Smaragd, the light extract, which simply belongs to a Nicolaihof wine, especially when it turns out so lush and needs grounding. The warmth of the wine finally shows in the pleasant long finish.
Food recommendations by Christoph Raffelt
- 12-hour pork belly, sweet potato puree, baked stone fruit
- Lemon chicken, Ras el-Hanout, dates
- Whole baked celery, smoked labneh, fried spring onions
