Wine Description for Naturweiss 2023 by Schätzel

Colour & Appearance
Cloudy, luminous golden yellow – unfiltered and unclarified, as befits an authentic natural wine. The natural cloudiness signals vitality and artisanal integrity.
Nose
Fascinatingly complex and wild: slate aromas dominate initially, accompanied by a seductive smoky note. Beneath these unfold yeasty tones and yellow fruit – mango, orange and candied lemon peel. This untamed authenticity lends the wine its distinctive, almost anarchic character.
Palate
Substantial and gripping – a wine to chew on. Impressive density meets stimulating acidity and a pronounced saline minerality. The texture is lively, the structure perfectly balanced. With just 11.5% alcohol, it remains featherlight and invigorating – a wine that positively demands a second glass.
Finish
Persistently mineral with a saline aftertaste and a fine, citrus-like freshness that refreshes the palate and prepares it for the next sip.
Grape Variety & Vinification
A Rheinhessen cuvée of Silvaner, Riesling and Müller-Thurgau – spontaneously fermented, unfiltered and without oenological corrections. A textbook example of how skilfully Kai Schätzel achieves maximum expression through minimal intervention.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Surprisingly versatile: Perfect with papaya salad with mint, watercress and peanuts or crostini with celery, sheep’s cheese, anise and orange mint. The saline minerality and lively acidity harmonise beautifully with fruity and spicy components – think Asian cuisine, fermented vegetables or peppery goat’s cheese.
Special Characteristics
A natural wine without compromise, proving that German winemakers are at the forefront of the international natural wine movement. Authentic, unvarnished and full of personality – not a wine for conventionalists, but a feast for discoverers.
