Wine profile
The Große Lage Pettenthal on the Rote Hang is without question one of the most impressive sites of its kind. Spectacular steep slopes, characterised by striking red slate, and dense rows of vines represent Kai Schätzel's enormous commitment to manual labour and meticulous care.

Processing methods
A natural fermentation process in large wooden barrels, followed by several months on the full lees, gives this wine its characteristic note.

Colour scheme
At first sight, the intense golden yellow stands out, accentuated by a hint of green reflections and a slight cloudiness.

Fragrances
The 2020 Niersteiner Pettenthal Riesling VDP.Erste Lage does not yet fully reveal its complex charm. The wine, which is hidden under a layer of yeast and a strong minerality, should definitely be decanted to reveal its full greatness. Fruit notes of quince, apple skin, apricot, orange and vineyard peach already foreshadow what lies behind its spicy and powerful surface. It is clear that this wine is one in the rough.

Taste
On the palate, this wine captivates with its tart, citrus-like fruitiness and fine tannins. It unfolds into a complex taste experience with great ageing potential, which only really comes into its own with increasing age. A silky mix of richness and power, all rounded off with a comparatively low alcohol concentration of 11.5 vol%. Decanting is essential for full enjoyment. It unfolds best when moderately cool and in a generous Burgundy glass.

Accompanying food recommendations
Roasted vegetables with a crispy crust, jacket potatoes with homemade avocado cream or lobster with garlic-lime butter and exotic rice variation. Last but not least, consider pairing this wine with roasted quail served on a bed of wild herb puree and garnished with raspberry vinegar sauce.
