Wine Description for Riesling Pettenthal GG 2020 by Schätzel

Colour & Appearance
Intense golden yellow with delicate green reflections, naturally hazy – a wine that reveals its authenticity right in the glass.
Nose
Initially closed under a veil of yeast notes and mineral intensity. With air contact, a fascinating interplay of aromas unfolds: spicy and smoky, with notes of quince, apple skin, apricot, orange and vineyard peach. A rough diamond that rewards patience.
Palate
Gripping and substantial, almost chewy. Tart, citric fruit meets fine tannins – an unusual but highly welcome texture for a Riesling. The structure is impressive: fullness and power combine with depth and elegance. At moderate 11.5% alcohol, this wine demonstrates the art of restraint. This wine requires either time in bottle or at least an hour in a decanter.
Finish
Long, mineral-driven, with persistent freshness and a saline note that recalls the red slate rock of Pettenthal.
Terroir & Origin
The Pettenthal on the legendary Roter Hang in Nierstein is one of Rheinhessen’s most dramatic vineyard sites. Steep slopes of distinctly red slate rock, densely planted rows that shade themselves – all pure handwork. This terroir shapes the wine with its mineral intensity and ageing potential.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Riesling, spontaneously fermented in large wooden casks, aged for several months on full lees. Kai Schätzel gives the wine time to develop its complexity – an approach that pays off.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Langoustine with carrot and orange-ginger butter, quail with raspberry vinegar jus and wild herb polenta, or vegetarian with braised leek hearts with celeriac in salt crust. The wine pairs well with bold flavours and complex preparations.
Special Features
A VDP Großes Gewächs with enormous ageing potential. Definitely decant and enjoy from large Burgundy glasses at not too cold a temperature. Those with patience will be rewarded in 5-10 years with an extraordinary wine.
