  • The Gewürztraminer 350 N.N. 2022 from Odinstal in the Palatinate presents itself as an unconventional, consistently dry representative of its grape variety. Andreas Schumann creates a taut, structured wine with fine bitterness, which deliberately forgoes lush sweetness and instead focuses on elegance and depth.

  • 👃 Aroma: Restrained and profound with grapefruit zest, bergamot, lychee, orange blossom, orchid and rose blossom; spicy notes of roasted fennel and coriander seed, fresh coriander, lemongrass and summer savory
  • 👅 Palate: Consistently dry with moderate acidity and fine bitter compounds; delicate, fresh fruit with citric accents; compact, elegant appearance with convincing bitter finish
  • 🎭 Character: A serious, shy Gewürztraminer far removed from fullness and oiliness – austere, taut and yet structured with grip; elegant, profound and occasionally earthy
  • 🍽️ Food Pairing: Papaya-mango salad with spicy prawns, braised rabbit with tajine and couscous, Puy lentils with braised aubergine and ricotta

Wine description for Gewürztraminer 350 N.N. 2022 from Odinstal

Colour & Appearance
Rich golden yellow with distinctly orange reflections – a visual hint at the intensity and ripeness of this grape from the Palatinate.
Nose
Andreas Schumann breaks radically with the cliché of the perfumed Gewürztraminer. Instead of cloying sweetness, a shy, profound wine presents itself with remarkable complexity. Grapefruit zest and bergamot meet lychee, flanked by orange blossom and delicate orchids. True finesse reveals itself in the ethereal notes of roasted fennel and coriander seed, complemented by fresh lemongrass and summer savory. An earthy base lends unexpected gravitas to the aromatic profile.
Palate
Consistently dry with just 0.7 g/l residual sugar – a Gewürztraminer at the absolute limit. A fine, oily film at the outset is quickly succeeded by moderate acidity and fine bitter notes. The wine shows itself compact and restrained, far removed from any banality. The delicate fruit tastes fresher and more citric on the palate than on the nose, less floral, yet more precise. The 13.5% alcohol is perfectly integrated.
Finish
The fine bitter tone in the finish convinces through length and elegance – a hallmark of this uncompromising vinification. Structure and grip without weight.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% steel tank fermentation with an innovative approach: 15-20% whole-bunch fermentation lends the wine structure and grip without burdening it. Nine months ageing, lightly sulphited before bottling. This vinification demonstrates that Gewürztraminer can also be austere and taut.
Food Pairing Recommendations
The versatility surprises: papaya-mango salad with spicy prawns harmonises with the exotic fruit, braised rabbit with tajine finds resonance in the spice notes, whilst Puy lentils with braised aubergine, miso and ricotta emphasises the earthy side of the wine.
Special Features
A bold counterpoint to conventional Gewürztraminer – for lovers of dry, structured white wines with character. The Odinstal proves that this grape variety can do far more than sweet pleasantness.
