Wine Description for Schlossberg Achkarren Grauburgunder GG 2022 from Franz Keller

Colour & Appearance
Pale golden yellow with brilliant clarity – a visual harbinger of the concentration and ripeness that this Grauburgunder from the steep vineyard site brings.
Nose
Complex and multi-layered, the bouquet presents: white peach, pear and apple form the ripe fruit foundation, complemented by citrus notes and a hint of Galia melon. The volcanic origin reveals itself in mineral nuances of flint and graphite, whilst nutty tones, subtle herbal spice and a delicate wood note lend additional depth.
Palate
Taut, precise, electrifying – this completely dry-fermented Grauburgunder is the antithesis of a soft southern wine cliché. Despite the warmth of the Achkarrer Schlossberg, it displays vibrant acidity and racy energy. The volcanic soil contributes a tension-filled minerality, whilst the twelve-month maturation in large oak casks and six months on full lees provide volume and creamy texture, without compromising elegance and precision. A wine of impressive length and structure.
Finish
Long, mineral and fresh with persistent fruit notes and a saline trace that invites the next sip.
Terroir & Origin
From the heart of the Achkarrer Schlossberg, a historically significant steep vineyard site with calcareous volcanic rock. This warm site in the Kaiserstuhl produces wines of exceptional minerality and concentration – a terroir that ranks amongst Germany’s finest.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Gris (Grauburgunder), spontaneously fermented to 0 grams residual sugar. Maturation over 12 months in 2,000-litre oak casks and a further six months in stainless steel tanks, both on full lees – a vinification that maintains complexity and freshness in perfect balance.
Food Pairing Recommendations
This powerful, dry Grauburgunder demands corresponding cuisine: pan-fried turbot, veal sweetbreads, morels in cream sauce, truffled risotto or aged Comté. Also an exciting pairing with Asian dishes featuring ginger and lemongrass.
Special Features
A rare cru Grauburgunder from one of Baden’s finest vineyard sites. Franz Keller demonstrates that this often underestimated grape variety is capable of great complexity and ageing potential – a Grosses Gewächs in the finest sense.
