Wine Description for Eichberg Oberrotweil Spätburgunder GG 2022 from Franz Keller

Colour & Appearance
Medium cherry red with vibrant transparency that underscores the Burgundian style.
Nose
Powerful and complex, this Eichberg presents dark spice and herbal notes. The ripe cherry fruit oscillates between sweet and tart, accompanied by Indian spices and an animalistic note of hung beef. A hint of cassis suggests slight reduction – nothing off-putting, rather a sign of depth and development potential.
Palate
Fleshy and juicy, the wine unfolds with wild berries, cherries and a hint of rose. Graphite and mineral notes lend it structure and tension. The tannin still shows youthful firmness, but perfectly balanced, the oak already well integrated. A certain rusticity – in the best sense – connects the wine to its origins: earthy, authentic, with ethereal nuances that reconcile elegance and power.
Finish
Medium to long with persistent fruit, fine spice and mineral resonance. The structure promises good ageing potential.
Terroir & Origin
The Oberrotweiler Eichberg is a premium site with southern to south-western exposure and black volcanic rock, which gives the wine its mineral precision and depth. The parcel, planted in 1994 with Burgundian clones, yields grapes of exceptional concentration.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), spontaneously fermented to 1.3 grams residual sugar. Matured for 18 months in French barriques with 45% new oak – a bold decision that gives the wine structure without dominating it.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A wine for demanding meat dishes: pink roasted venison or saddle of deer, duck breast with cherry sauce, coq au vin, braised ox cheeks or a mature rib-eye steak. Also an excellent choice with game terrine or aged Comté.
Special Features
A Grosses Gewächs that bears Franz Keller’s signature: powerful, terroir-driven and authentic. A wine that already gives pleasure now, but will also reward patience.
