The vines in the Eichberg stand on pure black volcanic rock called tephrite and always produce dark and distinctive wines. Friedrich Keller describes the clonal material as a colourful bag of old German clones, selection Massale and French Dijon clones, which father Fritz planted at the foot of the Eichberg in 1997. The wines are fermented spontaneously in barriques with a good 30% of new wood.
Color
Dark ruby red, transparent and clear.
Nose
It rolls out of the glass at walking speed, the music turned up all the way, the moderate beat announcing the pulsating fruit of this powerful Pinot Markant, and the 2018 Oberrottweiler Eichberg Spätburgunder Großes Gewächs from Fritz Keller boldly exudes its darkly fruity, lush perfume. Earthy with notes of undergrowth, black fruits and mild spices, it has a smoky top note of hot tar and decent bass in the heart. Black walnuts, blackberries, mulberries and a little plum in the verse are complemented by allspice, black cardamom and juniper in the chorus.
Mouth
It also rolls over the palate with pressure and a good bass. The fruit as an essence has a stable framing through the youthful tannins, which line the mouth tightly and finely like burgundy Napa leather seats in a '61 Brougham DeVille Cadillac. Silky and dense, they coat the lively acidic nerve, the dark-fruited extract seems light-footed and fine on the palate instead of scoring points with lush concentration. The ripe acidity is the fuel and runs from the nose to the dark-fruity, ethereal finish. Press repeat!
