Wine Description for Riesling “vom blauen Schiefer” 2023 by Clemens Busch

Character
Clemens Busch is among the pioneers of biodynamic viticulture on the Mosel and has established his estate in Pünderich as one of the region’s most renowned addresses. The Riesling “vom blauen Schiefer” represents the essence of Devonian slate terroir, which characterises the steep slopes of the Mosel. With 12% alcohol and subtle residual sweetness, this wine presents itself as a classic Mosel Riesling with elegance and finesse, embodying the characteristic balance between fruit, minerality and acidity.
Terroir & Origin
The name says it all: the blue Devonian slate of the Pünderich vineyards imparts its distinctive character to this Riesling. These ancient, weathered slate soils retain warmth, promote drainage and lend the wines that smoky-mineral spice which distinguishes Mosel Rieslings worldwide. The steep vineyard slopes with gradients of up to 70% and the climatic conditions of the cool Mosel valley create ideal conditions for slow ripening and pronounced aromatic complexity. The 2023 vintage benefited from a well-balanced growing cycle.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Clemens Busch has managed his vineyards according to biodynamic principles for decades, which is reflected in the vibrancy and precision of his wines. Hand-harvesting on the extremely steep slopes, spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts and the avoidance of oenological corrections result in wines that reflect their origins unfiltered. The Riesling vom blauen Schiefer is conceived as an estate wine that makes the house’s signature and the typicity of the vineyard site accessible – an authentic ambassador of Pünderich’s terroirs.
Food Pairing Recommendations
The combination of subtle residual sweetness, vibrant acidity and mineral structure makes this Riesling an ideal companion to light to medium-weight cuisine. Perfect with freshwater fish, pan-fried char or trout meunière, as well as asparagus with hollandaise sauce, goat’s cheese or Asian dishes with ginger and lemongrass. The wine also demonstrates its class when enjoyed solo as an aperitif.
