Wine information

For this wine, Boris Champy used Pinot Noir from the Clos des Anges in the 1er Cru site Vignes Franches. The site is located in Beaune just before Pommard and north of Clos des Mouches. The soil is very chalky and poor with little humus on the surface. The vines have to go deep into the ground, but fortunately they are also old. The 0.21 hectares are surrounded by a dry stone wall. The vine density is around 10,000 in Guyot training. The harvest took place on 20 August. Boris Champy used 70 % whole bunches in the fermentation in wooden fermentation racks. The wine was aged exclusively in Pièces the Tonnellerie Eric Millard with 50 % of new wood over twelve months.

Nose

Boris Champys Beaune 1er Cru Vignes Franches 2020 is, of his wines, the one that has the most power and also needs the longest development phase. At the same time, it already shows itself to be decidedly approachable and offers the very fine expression of a Beaune 1er Cru. This is not least due to the rather high proportion of new wood, the use of which, however, requires the mastery of Boris Champy, who knows very well which site requires and tolerates how much and which wood. Thus, the wood discreetly combines the wine with violet blossoms, cherries, raspberries, plums and liquorice, some forest earth and cool iodine and stony notes as well as a hint of plum cream.

Palate

Also on the palate is the Vignes Franches Extremely juicy and fresh, quite opulent in the ripe dark fruit, slightly creamy and silky in texture, but then again lively in the acidity and minerality and grippy in the tannin framework along with the raisins used. The Pinot Noir is punchy and delicious with a perfect use of wood. This is a Beaune 1er Cru with finesse, gourmandise and great potential.
