Information about the wine:
The Chardonnay grapes of the Blanc d'Argile come from the Lieut-Dit Beaune, a vineyard with clay (Argile) in the topsoil and Kimmeridge limestone in the subsoil. Such Chardonnay grapes are also used in the neighbouring Chablis. The base wine was aged in used wood.
Color:
medium straw yellow with lively mousseux
Nose:
Bertrand Gautherot's Blanc d'Argile opens, typical of this domaine, with a hint of crumbly stone fruit. But citrus, graphite, lime, herbs and light nuances of buttered toast quickly take over. The very young Blanc d'Argile is still on the bright, demanding citrus side, but at the same time open and inviting.
Mouth:
Gautherot has produced an excellent vintage with the 2015 Blanc d'Argile. This Blanc de Blancs has traction, pressure, radiance, grip, and a linear, absolutely pure and lively acidity. In addition to the crisp as well as ripe citrus fruit that dominates now at a young age, it is primarily herbs, salt and grated stones that provide bright aromatics, while acidity and minerality create a brilliant texture. The wine clearly reminds of crus from the Chablis in its aroma. However, its perlage is lively as well as tonic, and it will move into more and more yellow-fruity dimensions in the course of the next few years.
Food recommendations by Christoph Raffelt:
- Norway lobster with kohlrabi, turnips and wild herbs
(seafood, root vegetables, wild herbs)
- Young, lightly smoked eel with fennel pollen, salt lemon and turnips
(fish, eel)
- Gorgonzola tart with figs, pear and a touch of honey
(Cheese, Blue, Vegetable & Vegetarian)
