Wine Description for Cumières Premier Cru Brut Nature LBC23 by Georges Laval

Character
Georges Laval belongs to those uncompromising Champagne vignerons who place authenticity above perfection. This Brut Nature from Cumières forgoes dosage entirely, thereby revealing the pure essence of the terroir. The cuvée of Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier – the latter often underestimated, yet masterfully deployed here – displays an unvarnished directness that has become rare in Champagne. Laval’s biodynamic approach and minimal cellar intervention create a Champagne that offers substance rather than flattery.
Terroir & Origin
Cumières, situated on the south-facing slope of the Marne, ranks among Champagne’s historic Premier Cru vineyard sites. The chalky soils with chalk subsoil lend these wines the mineral precision for which this region is renowned. The southern exposure favours ripeness, whilst cool nights preserve freshness. Laval has farmed his parcels biodynamically for decades, resulting in living soils and grapes with pronounced personality – an approach that remains the exception in this commercially driven region.
Grape Variety & Vinification
The combination of Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier is typical of Cumières and gives this Champagne its distinctive identity. Whilst Chardonnay contributes elegance and structure, Pinot Meunier – the traditional grape variety of vignerons rather than négociants – brings fruit richness and texture. Laval’s vinification takes place in used wooden barrels, spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts is a given. The zero dosage demands perfectly ripe fruit and is a commitment to truthfulness: what lands in the glass is exclusively wine, terroir and time.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This dry, substance-rich Champagne calls for oysters, scallops or smoked fish. The saline minerality harmonises beautifully with seafood and sushi. Also an excellent choice with aged Comté or goat’s cheese. The absence of dosage makes it the ideal companion for raw fish and ceviche.
