Wine description for Barolo DOCG Riserva 2016 from Vietti

Visual impression

The glass reveals a deep, penetrating garnet red, which fades into subtle mahogany-coloured reflections at the rim - like the last sunlight grazing the old tiled roofs of Alba. The viscosity of the wine draws slow, deliberate tears on the wall of the glass - a silent indication of its concentration and structure.

Nose

The aromatic complexity unfolds in waves, not in a single moment. Initially, we encounter dark fruits - cassis and blackberry - interwoven with a noble spice palette of cinnamon and vanilla. With each subsequent moment in the glass, new dimensions open up: earthy truffle notes reminiscent of autumn walks through Piedmontese forests, dried figs and cherries that tell of the traditional culture of the region. The hint of tobacco and smoke lends the bouquet an intellectual depth, as if you were sitting in the library of an old country manor, surrounded by leather-bound books and the scent of times gone by. It is this mystical quality that characterises the great Barolo - never completely decipherable, always seductive.

Palate

The palate reveals the true character of this exceptional vintage. The structure is impressive - distinctive but already silky tannins that form the backbone without ever dominating. The lively acidity, typical of Nebbiolo from higher altitudes, gives the wine a radiant energy that is perfectly balanced by a subtle fruit sweetness. The minerality - an echo of the calcareous soils of Piedmont - runs through the wine like a silver thread, giving it precision and focus.

What particularly characterises this 2016 is the harmony between power and grace. It has the concentration and depth expected of a great Barolo, but also an unusual accessibility for its young age. The fruit is pure and expressive, and the structural elements are already surprisingly well integrated. Nevertheless, this is clearly a wine that will develop over decades, with its tertiary flavours of forest floor, dried roses and white truffles slowly unfolding.

General information

The 2016 vintage in Piedmont is already regarded as one of the most important of the last few decades. The perfect balance between warmth and coolness allowed the Nebbiolo grapes to ripen slowly and evenly, reaching their full phenolic maturity without losing any of their freshness. At 14.5% alcohol, this Barolo Riserva shows the natural power of the vintage without ever appearing heavy or overloaded.

Vietti, a winery with a history dating back to the 19th century, has developed into one of the most respected producers in the region under the management of the Currado family. Their vineyards, spread across several of the best sites in the Barolo area, allow them to create a Riserva that reflects the diversity and depth of the terroir.

Food pairing suggestions

The culinary accompaniments for such a wine should match its nobility without overshadowing it. Truffle and celeriac baked in puff pastry offer a vegetarian option that emphasises the earthy notes of the wine. For meat lovers, a Leg of lamb stuffed with anchovies, bread, olives and sun-dried tomatoes - a dish that combines Mediterranean depth with the structural power of wine. To finish, a Tomino MeleThis characteristic cheese from Piedmont, accompanied by a rustic fruit bread, is the perfect bridge between the wine and the end of a special meal.

As with all great wines, patience is a virtue. Although this Barolo is already a pleasure to drink, it will reveal many secrets over the next 15 to 20 years. A wine that should not only be drunk, but experienced.
