Gorgollassa

The almost forgotten, indigenous grape variety Gorgollassa is a true treasure of Mallorcan viticultural history. Native to the Balearic Islands, this late-ripening grape produces red wines of remarkable freshness and transparency, which stand out refreshingly from the heavy, high-alcohol wines of the Mediterranean region. In the glass, it typically presents a pale, luminous cherry red and exudes a delicate bouquet of wild red berries, sour cherries and subtle notes of Mediterranean wild herbs. On the palate, Gorgollassa captivates with a vital acid structure, fine-grained tannins and an animating juiciness, which pairs outstandingly with air-dried ham, grilled vegetables or, served slightly chilled, with delicate fish dishes.

Just how vibrant and refined this rare variety can be interpreted is demonstrated by winemaker Bárbara Mesquida Mora on her biodynamically farmed estate. Her single-varietal Gorgollassa d’es Monjos from Mesquida Mora perfectly captures the delicate, almost ethereal character of the grape and proves how much distinctive energy resides in Mallorca’s traditional vines.
