Doña Blanca

In the Atlantic-influenced north-west of Spain, particularly in the rolling hills of Bierzo, Doña Blanca finds its home. This white grape variety, also known as Síria in neighbouring Portugal, is a fine provider of texture. It yields wines with mild acidity that shine with a delicate creaminess, balsamic notes of wild herbs and ripe stone fruit, as well as a subtle hint of bitter almond on the finish. Traditionally, it is valued as the ideal partner for the more high-acid Godello, as it lends the blend a wonderful depth and textural richness.

How harmoniously this interplay succeeds is demonstrated by the Sangarida winery with its “La Yegua”, in which Doña Blanca and Godello merge into a juicy, mineral-driven unity. Such wines call for honest cuisine – they accompany grilled octopus just as effortlessly as intense mountain hazelnut cheese.
