Wine Description for Riesling Rauenthaler Baiken 1G Erste Lage 2023 by Peter Jakob Kühn

Character
Peter Jakob Kühn is among the pioneers of biodynamic viticulture in the Rheingau and has developed his estate into one of the leading addresses for authentic, terroir-driven Rieslings. The Rauenthaler Baiken from the Erste Lage vineyard site stands for precise minerality and crystalline clarity, achieved through consistently natural vineyard practices and restrained cellar work. With 12% alcohol and subtle residual sweetness, this 2023 presents itself as a classically elegant Rheingau Riesling that harmoniously combines freshness and substance.
Terroir & Origin
The vineyard site Rauenthaler Baiken ranks among the most significant vineyards of the Rheingau and lies in the gentle hills above Rauenthal. The deep phyllite soils with their high slate content lend the wines a characteristic mineral tension and remarkable ageing potential. The cooler microclimate of the elevated site ensures a longer growing season and thus produces Rieslings of particular finesse and vibrant acidity structure. Kühn’s biodynamic management with Demeter certification allows the soils to express their full character.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Riesling finds its classical home in the Rheingau, and Kühn interprets this tradition with uncompromising craftsmanship. The grapes are hand-harvested, fermented spontaneously and aged in traditional wooden casks. The absence of oenological intervention allows wines to emerge that authentically reflect the 2023 vintage – a balanced year with good ripeness. The slight residual sweetness is perfectly integrated and underscores the fruit clarity without compromising the dry character.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A versatile companion to pan-fried char, scallops or asparagus with hollandaise sauce. The mineral structure harmonises beautifully with goat’s cheese or lightly smoked trout. Also an excellent choice with Asian cuisine and its balance of sweetness and spice.
