Wine Description for Riesling Hengst Grand Cru 2023 from Domaine Zind-Humbrecht
- Colour & Appearance
- Rich golden yellow with luminous green reflections – a Riesling that reveals its origins from the limestone-rich Hengst even in the glass.
- Nose
- A monument of aromatics. This Riesling speaks with unusual intensity: ripe yellow plums, mirabelle plums, Nashi pear and honeydew melon meet delicate citrus notes of grapefruit and pomelo. Yet the true soul of the wine lies deeper: flint, gunpowder, cold smoke – a dark, almost mystical minerality that seems to rise directly from the calcareous-marly subsoil of the Grand Cru. Vegetable tones of roasted corn and buttery popcorn add warmth, whilst dried herbs such as marjoram and tarragon set subtle nuances.
- Palate
- Surprisingly composed after the powerful nose. Cool, precise, balanced – the fruit steps back in favour of texture and depth. The acidity is remarkably restrained for a Riesling, yet perfectly integrated. It carries without dominating. A meditative wine with enormous length, saline minerality and quiet elegance. It does not demand, it reflects – a storyteller that only reveals its tale when one listens.
- Finish
- Long, mineral, with cool precision. The saline note lingers, accompanied by fine herbal nuances and a hint of citrus peel.
- Terroir & Origin
- From the Grand Cru Hengst in Wintzenheim, 270–370m altitude. The parcels near Clos Häuserer grow on Oligocene calcareous-marly conglomerates – a mixture of marl, stony sandstone and calcareous sandstone, rich in iron and minerals. The young vineyard (replanted in 2016) yielded only 30 hl/ha in 2023 – pure concentration.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- Scallops with saffron sauce, pan-fried turbot, calf’s sweetbread in butter, asparagus with Hollandaise sauce, aged Comté or Beaufort. A wine that leaves room – for food, conversation, interpretations.
- Special Characteristics
- A Riesling with charisma that does not push itself to the fore. The climatic development in Alsace has favoured Riesling at Hengst – this 2023 demonstrates impressively what potential lies in this vineyard site. Zind-Humbrecht’s biodynamic philosophy manifests itself in every sip.
