Wine Description for Gewürztraminer Clos Windsbuhl 2019 1500ml Magnum from Domaine Zind-Humbrecht

Colour & Appearance
Luminous, intense golden yellow that already announces the concentration and maturity of this extraordinary vintage in the glass.
Nose
A fascinating paradox: Opulent aromas of sweet plums, juicy pineapple and orange marmalade meet a cool, almost chalky minerality. After decanting, fine spice notes of coriander, dried ginger and anise unfold – everything subtly interwoven, never obtrusive. This elegance sets the Windsbuhl apart from ordinary Gewürztraminers.
Palate
Here the true class reveals itself: The wine dances, so to speak, with precise acidity, immense freshness and a liveliness rarely found in this grape variety. The residual sweetness – certainly present – recedes into the background, functioning more as a texture-giver than as a dessert wine. Pear and pineapple dominate, underpinned by saline precision. A sweet-sour, aromatic fireworks display that redefines the concept of umami.
Finish
Long, mineral and with impressive persistence. The freshness carries through to the end, whilst the spice aromas gently linger.
Terroir & Origin
Clos Windsbuhl sits above Hunawihr on Triassic shell limestone – a magnesium-rich, dolomitic limestone with thin humus layer. The sloping vineyard site brings warmth, whilst proximity to the forest provides cooling influence. This balance between warmth and coolness fundamentally shapes the wine’s elegant character.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Gewürztraminer, slowly fermented with natural residual sugar (Moelleux). The higher altitude and cooler conditions ensure extended ripening time and naturally higher acidity – the key to elegance.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Caramelised chicory with grapefruit, beef fillet with caramelised salsify or pineapple tart with Gewürztraminer foam. Also excellent with Asian cuisine featuring ginger and coriander.
Special Features
The magnum bottle promises even slower, more harmonious development. Be sure to decant at least a day beforehand and serve not too cold in large Burgundy glasses. A long-distance runner with enormous ageing potential.
