Wine profile

Situated on the slopes of the village of Hunawihr, Clos Windsbuhl rises above an exceptional geology of limestone, a feature found in many of the region's prime vineyards. The so-called "dolomitic" limestone, rich in magnesium and filled with fossils, dates from the Triassic period. The thinned soil layer forces the vines to bore into the nutrient-poor parent rock. Limestone soils tend to be cool, but the slope and orientation of the vineyard contribute enough heat to warm the soil sufficiently for the grape variety that needs it.

Regarding the ripening process, one has to keep in mind that Windsbuhl is located on a higher level and near a forest, which has a natural cooling influence on the wines. The Gewurztraminer needs time to mature, thus acquiring an elegant quality and has a higher natural acidity. The 2019 ferments slowly with a touch of residual sweetness, making it a Moelleux.

Appearance

Vibrant, deep golden yellow.

Fragrance profile

The 2019 Gewürztraminer Clos Windsbuhl unfolds notes of sweet plums, pears, juicy pineapple and orange marmalade, while at the same time revealing a bold, chalky undertone. It exudes great elegance and mineral depth. After decanting, its aroma intensifies with notes of coriander, dried ginger and aniseed. All aromas are well interwoven and never seem intrusive.

Taste profile

The wine is like a dance on the tongue. The cool notes are accompanied by a very precise acidity, an impressive freshness and a lively vitality. The sweetness is pushed into the background behind the dominant pear and pineapple fruit, but creates an irresistible charm in the process. It finishes with salty precision and a sweet-sour and aromatic pop. A true marathon runner that is impressive to drink now and will be even more impressive in a few years. A superb example of elegance and pure umami!

Those who are impatient should consider decanting it at least a day in advance and serving it not too cold, preferably from large Burgundy glasses.

Alternatively, it could be served with:

- Browned endive salad with blood orange and pine nuts
- Beef tenderloin with caramelised parsnips
- Pineapple mousse with Gewürztraminer mousse and mint sorbet
