Wine Description for Pinot Noir de la Côte des Bar Brut Nature 2020 by Louise Brison

Character
A Brut Nature Champagne from pure Pinot Noir – radically pure, without any dosage. Louise Brison demonstrates with this wine the unvarnished truth of the Côte des Bar: powerful, straightforward and marked by mineral precision. The zero dosage reveals the natural ripeness of the 2020 vintage and demands perfectly mature grapes. A Champagne for purists, one that places authenticity above approachability.
Terroir & Origin
The Côte des Bar in the far south of Champagne, closer to Chablis than to Reims, forms a distinctive terroir. Here, Kimmeridge limestone soils dominate – the same geological formation as the Côte d’Or. The cooler, more continental climate and the hillside location shape a Pinot Noir of particular structure and tension. The region, historically known as Aube, is experiencing a renaissance through winemakers like Louise Brison, who are redefining the potential of this underestimated corner of Champagne.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir in pure form – a rarity in Champagne, where assemblage is king. The decision for Brut Nature (less than 3 g/l residual sugar) is a clear statement: the wine must convince on its own merits. The 2020 vintage, characterised by warmth and early ripeness, delivered concentrated grapes with natural balance. The vinification as Blanc de Noirs underscores the philosophy of reduction to essentials – no masking through dosage, only the pure fruit and minerality of the terroir.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The taut structure and absence of dosage make this Champagne the ideal companion for grilled salmon, sashimi or oysters. Excellent with roasted poultry, mushroom dishes or aged Comté. The minerality harmonises with scallops and seafood, whilst the Pinot structure also pairs well with rare roasted veal. A Champagne that doesn’t merely accompany food, but challenges it.
