Wine Description for Riesling Hallgartener Hendelberg 1G Erste Lage 2020 by Peter Jakob Kühn

Character
Peter Jakob Kühn is among the most uncompromising advocates of biodynamic viticulture in the Rheingau. His Hallgartener Hendelberg as Erste Lage (marked as “1G” according to the VDP classification system) represents precise provenance without frills. At 12.5% alcohol and with a dry orientation, this Riesling displays the clear, mineral signature of a winemaker who favours finesse over opulence. The 2020 vintage brought wines of concentrated clarity to the Rheingau – ripe, yet with the necessary tension.
Terroir & Provenance
The Hallgartener Hendelberg lies in the gentle hills above Hallgarten, one of the warmer vineyard sites in the Rheingau. The south-south-west exposure and deep loess-clay soils with quartz components lend the wines a characteristic spiciness and structure. Kühn manages his vineyards according to Demeter standards, eschewing herbicides and synthetic fertilisers. This philosophy creates wines that articulate their origins clearly – earthy, authentic, living.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Riesling finds perhaps its most classical expression in the Rheingau. Kühn’s approach is radically traditional: spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts, ageing in old wooden casks, minimal intervention in the cellar. The result is wines of vibrant energy that bring fruit, minerality and acidity into a dynamic equilibrium. The dry style underscores the saline minerality and fine texture that distinguish Kühn’s wines – Rieslings made for the table, not for cocktail hour.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This Riesling demands dishes with substance: pan-fried char with herb butter, veal topside with horseradish sauce, mature Comté or goat’s cheese with honey. The saline minerality harmonises beautifully with oysters or raw fish, whilst the structure also stands up to poultry in cream sauce. A wine for the table, not for terrace chat.
