Dark ruby red with black core, opaque.

The nose tells unmistakably of its Bordeaux origin, from Bayon, above Bourg on the right bank, just before the confluence of the Dordogne and Garonne rivers to form the Gironde. In contrast to the big names, authentic wines with a clear character of origin grow here. Cassis and cassis leaves, cherries and elderberries as well as prunes and mild spices like black pepper, piment d'Espelette, juniper and vetiver populate the rich nose of the 2014 Le Chevalier from Chateau Falfas.

On the palate, again typical Bordeaux with a fleshy, grippy tannin structure and rich, ripe fruit. At the same time, it has an Atlantic freshness that gives it depth and above all drinkability and gives the lie to those who claim that Bordeaux wines are always defined by massive tannins and solid stature. With good ageing potential for further years, the carafe and large glasses are recommended.

Food recommendations from Sebastian Bordthäuser

  • Parmigiana
  • Stuffed and grilled squid with spicy tomato salsa
  • Roasted duck with fritters from the duck fat and endive salad
