Color
In shining gold with discreet white-golden reflexes the wine shows itself clearly and brilliantly in the glass.
Nose
Full of pressure, yet still a bit locked in this youthful phase, this Veltliner demands carafe and aeration. Like its varietal counterparts from the Ried Schön and Spitzer Graben, the Vießlinger Stern has this "Muthenthaler-Veltlineresque" straightforwardness of ginger, lemongrass and verveine. Here, however, a different depth opens up in terms of yellow-fleshed fruit and density. Fully ripe, juicy yet crisp apricot and Sharon fruit meet quince juice and the comforting warmth of a baked apple. Filled with shortcrust pastry and basil flowers and doused with yarrow flower syrup, the latter becomes a delight....
...and with the setting down of the glass the nose leaves this sensory picture book and demands the first sip.
Palate
The 2017 Grüner Veltliner Vießlinger Stern from Martin Muthenthaler condenses on the palate the, already in the nose, immensely pronounced spectrum of aromas. The Sharon fruit seems roasted, the apricot is doused with lightly caramelized nut butter. Retronasal refreshing flavors of lime zest and mango contribute subtle and precisely balanced tropical exoticism. Gauzy bitterness, a defined body and moderate acidity place the wine in the fabulous balance of a several-meter-high Inuksuk.
