Wine Description for Brutal Orange VdF 2024 by Matassa

Colour & Appearance
Muted apricot with characteristic yeast haze – an honest declaration of natural winemaking, unfiltered and unrefined.
Nose
The nose is seductive and immediate: peach and apricot push to the fore, accompanied by grapefruit peel, sweet flowers and a hint of anise and candied fennel. Liquorice lends depth, whilst a cool iodine note and a fine sea breeze unmistakably reveal its origins in the sun-kissed, Mediterranean-influenced Roussillon.
Palate
Dry, lively, positively electrifying. The phenolic structure from skin-contact fermentation carries the wine without weighing it down. A delicate, invigorating bitter note and vibrant acidity give the palate tension and freshness, whilst saline minerality completes the picture. At just 10% ABV, this wine demonstrates that depth and complexity have nothing to do with alcohol.
Finish
Long, saline and utterly reviving – you simply don’t want to put the glass down. A wine that lingers.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes come from very old vines on slate-rich soils in Roussillon – one of southern France’s most characterful and wild wine regions. The terroir writes itself unmistakably into every sip.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Hand-harvested Macabeu grapes, 3–4 weeks of skin-contact fermentation with spontaneous fermentation of whole bunches, aged in used 500-litre barrels. Unfiltered, unrefined, with no added sulphites – consistent minimalism in the best sense.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Ideal with boquerones and grilled sardines, hummus with roasted vegetables, goat’s cheese or a generous selection of Catalan tapas. Also wonderful on its own – best served well chilled on a terrace – a true pleasure.
Special Features
A homage wine: dedicated to the legendary Bar Brutal in Barcelona, the temple of natural wine. Tom Lubbe of Matassa creates here a wine that unites philosophy and pleasure in a single sip – brutally good.
