Wine description for Brutal Orange VdF 2024 by Matassa

Character
The name says it all: Tom Lubbe, the South African winemaker behind Matassa, has created with his „Brutal Orange“ an uncompromising natural wine that celebrates the rustic side of Roussillon. At just 10% alcohol, this skin-fermented Macabeu presents itself as a light-footed, unadorned orange wine that prioritises drinkability over opulence. This is about pure fruit, vibrant texture and that characteristic tannin structure that skin contact brings – without any oenological embellishment.
Terroir & Origin
Roussillon, wedged between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean, is one of France’s most unspoilt wine regions. Matassa manages old parcels with sparse, stony soils characterised by slate and limestone. The Mediterranean climate with the notorious Tramontane wind ensures healthy grapes and concentrated aromas. Lubbe, who counts among the pioneers of the French natural wine movement, works according to biodynamic principles and consistently avoids sulphur and other additives.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Macabeu, known as Macabeo in Spain, is usually underestimated – unjustly so. In Lubbe’s hands, the variety reveals its aromatic depth and structure. The grapes are fermented with their skins, which gives the wine its amber hue and phenolic complexity. Skin fermentation extracts not only tannins but also spicy, nutty components. The low alcohol content results from early harvesting and minimal intervention – a deliberate counterpoint to concentrated, powerful wines. Ageing takes place in neutral vessels to preserve fruit clarity.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This wine calls for rustic, aromatic cuisine: grilled squid, bouillabaisse or Catalan butifarra pair perfectly. The Brutal Orange also shines with fermented vegetables, hummus with tahini or aged Manchego. The tannin structure also complements pan-fried chicken with lemon or Moroccan tagine.
