A silky, extract-rich white wine from the Côte de Nuits – named after the winemaker's daughter and, with its ripe fruit, delicate spice and saline finish, a fine example of Burgundian craftsmanship.
Bottler: Jerome Galeyrand, 2 route nationale 74, 21220 Brochon / France
In the glass
Colour
Quite full, luminous yellow.
Nose
Soft orchard fruit, ripe lemon and juicy stone fruit, accompanied by nuts, sweet spices and a mineral, stony note.
Palate
Juicy white- and yellow-fleshed fruit with a sweet-fruited core; full and round on the palate, with piquantly bitter citrus zest and a hint of salinity on the finish.
Character
Ripe and full-bodied yet finely balanced – a Chardonnay with depth that quietly but insistently tastes of Burgundy and its soils.
Pairing
With pan-fried zander in beurre blanc, chicken in a delicate cream sauce or mature Comté.
Notes
From just 0.42 hectares in Brochon, Flagey-Échezeaux and Gilly-lès-Cîteaux; organically farmed, partly biodynamic, pressed as whole bunches in a basket press, fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged for twelve months in used oak casks – without fining and with only minimal doses of sulphur.
Tasting note
Colour & appearance
A fairly full yellow in the glass – a Chardonnay that announces its ripeness and concentration visually, without appearing heavy.
Nose
Ripe, inviting aromatics: soft orchard fruit, ripe lemon and juicy stone fruit, accompanied by nuts, sweet spices and a fine mineral, stony note. A bouquet that radiates ripeness and calm – almost that of a wine with a few years of bottle age.
Palate
On the palate, the wine delivers what the nose promises: juicy white- and yellow-fleshed fruit, extract-rich, full and round. This is joined by a piquant, bitter note of citrus zest, which lends tension to the volume and ensures the wine never becomes tiring despite its richness.
Finish
In the finale, a subtle saltiness plays its part – it extends the finish and allows the citrus bitterness to fade away elegantly.
Terroir & origin
Named after Orane, Jérôme’s daughter, the wine comes from 0.42 hectares in Brochon, Flagey-Echezeaux and Gilly-lès-Cîteaux – thus from the heart of the Côte de Nuits, where the domaine is based in Saint-Philibert near Gevrey-Chambertin. From beginnings with a tiny 0.05 hectares in 2002, it has grown into an estate of 5.25 hectares, which was awarded a star in the Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France in 2020.
Grape variety & vinification
Pure Chardonnay. The vineyard work is organic, partly biodynamic and very labour-intensive. Whole bunches were crushed and pressed in a mechanical basket press; fermentation took place in tanks with indigenous yeasts. Ageing lasted twelve months in used oak barrels (228 litres) with little new wood. No fining, no enzymes, at most a light filtration and no to minimal use of sulphur – entirely in keeping with Galeyrand’s credo of expressing the terroir without technological intervention.
Food recommendations
The round, extract-rich character of this Chardonnay calls for substance on the plate: butter-poached fish such as turbot, chicken in a light jus, mushroom risotto or young hard cheeses – fitting for the story of a winemaker who once earned his living selling cheese.
Special features
It is the rare interplay of ripe, abundant fruit and salty-mineral drive that elevates this Bourgogne Chardonnay far beyond its appellation – a white wine with a depth one would hardly have expected from the red wine villages of the Côte de Nuits.
