Wine description for Blanc de Blancs Sekt Brut 2019 from Franz Keller
With this Blanc de Blancs, Franz Keller impressively proves that Baden has long been playing in the Champions League of German sparkling wine production. The single-varietal Chardonnay from the 2019 vintage combines Burgundian elegance with the mineral precision of volcanic soils - a sparkling wine that sets international standards.
Colour & appearance
In the glass, the sparkling wine is a bright light yellow with silver reflections. The perlage rises in fine, persistent chains - visual proof of the careful traditional bottle fermentation and the three-year maturation period on the lees.
Nose
The bouquet is almost lavish: Orange blossom water and Lemon zest form the aromatic prelude, followed by ripe yellow apples and delicate Stone fruit. The ageing on the lees reveals itself in seductive notes of warm yeast puff pastry, Icing and peeled almonds - hedonistic without losing its finesse.
Palate
The first sip surprises with juicy pressure and a fine, sparkling texture that caresses the entire palate. The fruity flavour tends towards citrus, complemented by crumbly apple and a fascinating note of buttered orange marmalade toast. The acidity structure is remarkable: broad, precise, accentuated by subtle salty notes - a sparkling wine with an irresistible drinking flow.
General information
The grapes come from Chardonnay vines on Volcanic rock with loess layerharvested early for optimum acidity structure. Only the first pressing (cuvée) was used. After traditional bottle fermentation and disgorgement in June 2022, the sparkling wine was dosed with just four grams - brut in the best sense of the word. The minimal use of sulphur only at the dosage stage emphasises the quality philosophy.
Food pairing suggestions
The versatility of this sparkling wine is impressive: Crostini with apple, early leek, pecorino and black pepper harmonise perfectly with the fruit-acid balance. Grilled prawns find the ideal partner in the mineral freshness. Even to Jamón Ibérico Gran Reserva the Blanc de Blancs asserts itself confidently.
Special features
With 12% alcohol, this sparkling wine remains elegant and easy to drink. The combination of volcanic minerality, precise acidity and hedonistic fruit makes it an exceptional example of German sparkling wine craftsmanship - a wine that proves that Chardonnay can also achieve great things north of Champagne.
