In the cool, Atlantic-influenced north-west of the Iberian Peninsula lies the historic home of the red grape variety Alvarelhão. Renowned for its delicate, almost translucent colour and a vibrant acidity, it produces wines of remarkable freshness and floral spice. Alvarelhão naturally tends towards moderate alcohol levels and captivates in the glass with clear aromas of wild strawberries, sour cherries, and a fine herbal note. This invigorating lightness makes it an ideal partner for sophisticated cuvées and sparkling wines. Just how harmoniously the variety integrates is demonstrated by the biodynamic estate Aphros Wine in Portugal’s Vinho Verde. Here, Alvarelhão lends a dancing freshness to the sparkling Phaunus Pet Nat Rosé in combination with the deeply coloured variety Vinhão, whilst in the Evoé! Rosé it joins forces with Vinhão and the white grape variety Loureiro to create a juicy, summery drinking pleasure that pairs beautifully with grilled fish or marinated vegetables.
