Wine Description for Pinot Grigio „Mepari“ DOC 2021 by Scarbolo
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous golden yellow with green reflections, delicately hazy – a visual promise of a Pinot Grigio beyond the mainstream category.
- Nose
- Impressive aromatic complexity: Initially dominated by ripe apples, honeydew melon and star fruit, followed by exotic hints of papaya and banana. With air contact, a fascinating second layer unfolds: honey, white nougat, a whisper of caramel, along with notes of tobacco box, café au lait, wheat and freshly baked baguette with salted butter – an aromatic journey between fruit and maturation.
- Palate
- Here the true class of this wine reveals itself: The ripe, exotic fruit notes merge with an invigorating bitter note of grapefruit and grapefruit zest. The texture is multifaceted – saline, sweet, with distinct umami components that lend the wine an almost savoury dimension. Remarkable depth and structure for a Pinot Grigio.
- Finish
- Long, expressive and of sustained complexity. The spicy and fruity components resonate harmoniously.
- Terroir & Origin
- The grapes come from Pozzut, a privileged vineyard site on alluvial deposits with dolomitic limestone. The eastern section with loamy soil, gravel and limestone inclusions is home to the estate’s oldest Pinot Grigio vines. For Mepari, exclusively grapes from the oldest 1.4 hectares with an average age of 26 years are used.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Hand-selected grapes, harvested in the cool morning hours of early September. No maceration, alcoholic fermentation partly in stainless steel, partly in 20-hl barrels. No malolactic fermentation. The special touch: 22 months ageing on fine lees with bâtonnage in the first three months, followed by 10 months bottle age. Bottled unfiltered – a craft approach that pays off.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- Its complexity and umami structure make it ideal for aromatic Asian cuisine, Thai curries, sushi and sashimi. It also harmonises beautifully with pan-fried monkfish, scallops, seafood risotto or mature hard cheese.
- Special Features
- A Pinot Grigio that redefines the boundaries of the grape variety – with the depth and complexity of a serious white wine. The extended lees ageing gives it a texture and dimension more commonly found in Burgundies.
