Wine Description for Pinot Grigio „Mepari“ DOC 2021 by Scarbolo
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous golden yellow with a hint of natural cloudiness and delicate green reflections – an unfiltered wine that displays its origins openly.
- Nose
- The nose is marked by seductive opulence: ripe apple, honeydew melon and star fruit set the tone, accompanied by tropical hints of papaya and banana. With air exposure, a second, deeper dimension unfolds – honey, white nougat, a touch of caramel, tobacco box and the irresistible aroma of freshly baked baguette with salted butter. A Pinot Grigio that takes all the time in the world.
- Palate
- On the palate, the Mepari displays remarkable complexity: the ripe, exotic fruit of the nose meets an invigorating, precise bitterness from grapefruit and grapefruit zest. To this is added a pronounced salinity – a wine whose creed is umami. Structure and texture are of rare density for this variety.
- Finish
- Long, spicy and persistent. The fruit fades, the saline minerality lingers – a finish that invites the next sip.
- Terroir & Origin
- The grapes come from the Pozzut, a vineyard site on alluvial deposits of dolomitic limestone in the Friuli plain. The loamy soil with abundant gravel and limestone inclusions gives the wine its mineral tension. For the Mepari, only the oldest vines from the parcel – 1.4 hectares with an average age of 26 years – are harvested.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pinot Grigio (Pinot Gris), hand-picked in baskets in the early morning hours of 10th and 11th September 2021. No maceration, extraction solely through must breaking. Fermentation with controlled temperatures, beginning in steel tank, finishing in 20-hectolitre barrel. Subsequently, the wine aged 22 months on fine lees – with regular bâtonnage during the first three months. Unfiltered, without malolactic fermentation, 10 months bottle age before release. A wine with genuine craftsmanship behind it.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- An ideal companion to scallops with butter sauce, grilled sea bass, risotto ai frutti di mare or pasta with truffle and Parmesan. It also reveals its full potential with Asian dishes with umami depth – such as miso salmon or Thai curry.
- Special Characteristics
- The Mepari is no ordinary Pinot Grigio. It is the antithesis of the light, pale mass-produced wine that the variety so often produces. Scarbolo’s consistent refusal to filter and the extraordinarily long lees ageing make it a characterful wine with genuine depth – and one of the most compelling arguments for Friuli as Italy’s white wine region.
