The Bassgeige is one of the iconographic sites of the Kaiserstuhl. It forms the foundation of the success of Keller's wines and is described by Friedrich Keller as the "business card of the winery". The Grauburgunder Erste Lage was fermented spontaneously and aged 60% in large wood and 40% in steel in a crisp dry style.

Color

Light straw yellow with bright reflections.

Nose

Fritz Keller's 2019 Grauburgunder Erste Lage from the Oberbergener Bassgeige shows what Grauburgunder is capable of. The exemplary use of wood gives it an appropriate framework and contours the fruit with a pointed pen. The peel of red apple and roasted almonds are underlaid with a light smokiness, along with notes of white pepper and a little sandalwood. With a complex nose, this Pinot Gris for adults demands upscale cuisine.

Mouth

Powerful and gripping, it bundles the compressed essence of the variety through stringent ageing. Structurally, it is firm on the palate with high inner tension and good density. The wood is just as reduced as the fruit, which flashes red-tinged here and there and reassures the inclined drinker that this is indeed a Baden Pinot Gris. With good bite and fine phenolic, it is animating and visibly expands in the glass.

Food recommendations from Sebastian Bordthäuser

  • Autumn salad of grapes, leeks, black walnuts with confit parsnips
  • Roasted pike-perch on a ragout of apple, parsnip and young leek
  • Sweetbreads on mashed potatoes with porcini mushrooms
