Wine description for the Zwickl Grüner Veltliner trocken 2022 from Nikolaihof

Colour & appearance

A brilliant, very light lemon yellow in the glass - youthful and inviting.

Nose

The Zwickl opens with remarkable liveliness: a hint of fresh yeast The name of the house signals its biodynamic signature. Behind it unfolds white flowers - chestnut and lime trees - and light green herbs such as chervil and coriander. Particularly fascinating: the mineral tones of wet pebbles and a chalky dimension reminiscent of Burgundian Chablis. This complexity is remarkable for an entry-level wine.

Palate

The true character of this wine is revealed on the palate. A crisp, precise acidity The flavours of the wine are driven forward, accompanied by a subtle salinity that sticks to the lips. The texture is exceptional: densely woven and silky at the same time, with a flavour reminiscent fine wax paper reminiscent feel. Despite a moderate 11.5% alcohol, the Zwickl develops impressive depth. The balance between fruit, acidity, subtle residual sweetness and minerality is almost perfectly balanced. The finish surprises with length and precision - far beyond what one might expect from this category. A wine with ageing potential of three to five years.

General information

The Zwickl comes mainly from the historic vineyard Steiner Goldberg (first mentioned in 1302) and from Mautern. The vines are rooted in crystalline rock - paragneiss, mica schist, quartzite - which produces loamy-sandy, stony Rigol soils. These poor, permeable soils characterise the mineral character of the wine. The biodynamically farmed Nikolaihof is one of Austria's pioneers of natural viticulture.

Food pairing suggestions

A versatile companion: perfect with baked char, Pikeperch with herbs, Asparagus with hollandaise sauce, Goat cheese or Light summer salads with vinaigrette. The salinity harmonises perfectly with Oysters or Seafood.

Special features

The Zwickl is an accessible introduction to the world of the legendary Nikolaihof - and proves that even basic wines from this estate can deliver exceptional quality. An honest, terroir-influenced Grüner Veltliner with soul.
