Wine description for the Oberbergener Bassgeige Pinot Noir VDP Erste Lage 2022 from Franz Keller

Colour & appearance

Medium cherry red with lively brilliance - a classic Baden Pinot that reveals its Burgundian character in the glass.

Nose

The Bassgeige opens with impressive clarity and freshness. Juicy cherries, cranberries and ripe raspberries dominate the bouquet, underpinned by fine woody notes. Vanilla, Cinnamon and Carnations from the discreetly used barrique. Underneath, hints of warm forest floor and a touch of dark cake batter shimmer through, lending the wine a seductive depth without overpowering its primary fruitiness.

Palate

On the palate, the 2022 is lively and supple at the same time. The texture is round and juicy, supported by an already well-integrated tannin and a ripe, yet refreshing acidity. The wine is airy and playful - almost Burgundian in its apparent lightness. But it should not be underestimated: beneath the accessible surface lies a remarkable structure and power. The finish shines with a subtle smoky note over dark fruit - an elegant, long finish that invites you to take another sip.

General information

The Oberbergener Bassgeige owes its name to the characteristic shape of the vineyard. Franz Keller utilises the unique terroir combination of loess on basalt, which gives the Pinot Noir structure and minerality. Spontaneously fermented to 1.5 grams of residual sugar, the wine matured for 12 months in French barriques with around 15% of new wood - enough to add complexity without masking the fruit.

Food pairing suggestions

This versatile Pinot harmonises excellently with pink roasted saddle of veal, Duck breast with cherry sauce or Braised fillet of beef. Also to Mushroom dishes, coq au vin or a ripe Comté it shows its strengths. Its lively acidity makes it the ideal companion for Salmon trout or Tuna Tataki.

Special features

An Erste Lage Pinot Noir that is already accessible now, but definitely has ageing potential for the next 5-8 years. Franz Keller once again demonstrates his flair for elegant, terroir-influenced Pinots from Baden.
