Wine Description for Riesling Marienburg Auslese VDP Grosse Lage 2023 by Clemens Busch

Colour & Appearance
Radiant golden yellow with greenish reflections, brilliant clarity. In the glass, an oily, almost syrupy texture reveals itself – a promise of concentration and noble sweet opulence.
Nose
Beguiling and multi-layered: ripe yellow peaches, apricot preserve and candied citrus peel merge with honeycomb and acacia blossom. Beneath lies a fascinating mineral layer – wet slate, flint and a hint of petrichor, reminiscent of rain on hot stones. The nose promises sweetness, yet never becomes heavy or one-dimensional.
Palate
Despite the generous residual sugar, this wine displays classic Mosel elegance: the vibrant acidity forms the backbone and prevents any heaviness. Ripe mirabelle plums, honeydew melon and quince dance with lime zest and a saline minerality that lends the wine tension and length. At just 7.5% alcohol, the Auslese feels feather-light, almost weightless – a paradox of concentration and drinkability.
Finish
Endless and precise. The sweetness fades slowly, whilst the slate minerality and a citrus-fresh acidity linger on the palate for minutes. A wine that invites contemplation.
Terroir & Origin
The Marienburg ranks amongst the most legendary steep slopes of the Mosel. Clemens Busch cultivates the various parcels with their different slate soils – blue, grey and red slate – biodynamically and vinifies them separately. This Auslese comes from extremely late-harvested grapes that benefit from the specific microclimates of the site.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Classic with blue cheese such as Roquefort or aged Comté. Excellent with foie gras, tarte Tatin or caramelised peach dessert. Surprisingly good with Asian cuisine featuring sweet-spicy contrasts, such as Thai curry or glazed duck.
Special Features
Clemens Busch ranks amongst the absolute elite of German winemakers. His biodynamically farmed vineyards and uncompromising quality philosophy make every wine a portrait of terroir. This Auslese unites opulence with precision – a masterpiece of balance.
