Wine description for Chardonnay Clos Windsbuhl 2023 from Domaine Zind-Humbrecht
Terroir & character
Clos Windsbuhl, one of the most prestigious vineyards in Alsace, is presented here in a rather unusual interpretation for the region. This Chardonnay epitomises the philosophy of Olivier Kind-Humbrechtone of the most consistent advocates of biodynamic viticulture in France. The plot, situated on calcareous shell limestone soil at a higher altitude near Hunawihr, offers the Chardonnay a cool microclimate that ensures slow, precise ripening.
With its restrained residual sweetness (low on the in-house scale), this wine presents itself as an expression of finesse rather than opulence. The moderate alcohol level of 12.5% indicates a wine that emphasises elegance over power - typical of the cooler exposure of the Windsbuhl, which ensures freshness and structure even in warm vintages.
Winemaking philosophy
The Domaine Zind-Humbrecht, certified biodynamic since 1998, is one of the beacons of Alsace. Olivier Zind-Humbrecht, holder of the prestigious Master of Wine title, works with minimal intervention in the cellar and maximum attention in the vineyard. His wines are always an expression of the terroir, not of the cellar master - a philosophy that gives this Chardonnay a special status, as the grape variety traditionally plays a minor role in Alsace.
The Clos Windsbuhl site, a walled vineyard with a long history, produces wines of remarkable precision and longevity in Zind-Humbrecht's hands. The late ripening cycle of this site gives the wines a characteristic acidity structure and aromatic complexity.
Food pairing suggestions
This Chardonnay calls for dishes that respect its mineral structure. Seafood such as poached lobster or scallops with citrus butter would harmonise, as would a Comté medium maturitywhose nutty components complement the wine's minerality. The acidity structure also makes it an ideal accompaniment for dishes with a creamy texture, without the wine losing any of its presence.
A wine that rewards patience - both in the glass, where it develops slowly, and in the cellar, where it can certainly mature for 8-12 years.
