Wine Description for Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru AOC 2021 by Bruno Clair

Character
Bruno Clair’s Chambertin-Clos de Bèze embodies Burgundian winemaking artistry at the highest level. The domaine, counted among the most respected producers of the Côte de Nuits, manages a privileged parcel in this legendary Grand Cru vineyard site. The 2021 vintage presents itself with impressive concentration and classical finesse despite challenging climatic conditions. Clair’s philosophy of restrained intervention in the cellar allows the terroir maximum expression – here the place itself speaks.
Terroir & Origin
The Clos de Bèze is regarded as one of the nine Grand Crus of Gevrey-Chambertin and shares geological affinity with the neighbouring Chambertin. The vineyard site at mid-slope elevation benefits from calcareous marl soils with excellent drainage. This combination of exposure, gradient and subsoil gives the wines their characteristic blend of power and elegance. The 2021 vintage was marked in Burgundy by late frosts and uneven ripeness – all the more remarkable that producers such as Clair were able to craft wines of such precision.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir displays its full range in the Clos de Bèze: dark fruit, earthy notes, spicy complexity. Bruno Clair works with traditional methods – moderate extraction, ageing in French barriques with restrained new oak. The result is wines that are never dominated by wood, but preserve the crystalline purity of the terroir. At 13% alcohol, the wine shows classical proportions, without the overripeness of some modern Burgundy styles.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A wine of this calibre demands sophisticated cuisine: venison loin with lingonberries, pigeon with truffle, Coq au Vin or aged Époisses. Wild mushroom dishes and duck breast also harmonise beautifully. The wine deserves time to breathe and benefits from several years of bottle age.
