Wine Description for Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru AOC 2021 by Bruno Clair

Character
The Chambertin-Clos de Bèze ranks among Burgundy’s most venerable vineyard sites – a name that has stood for uncompromising greatness since the Middle Ages. In the hands of Bruno Clair, one of the most conscientious winemakers of the Côte de Nuits, this becomes a wine of quiet authority: precise, profound, and possessing that inimitable balance between power and grace that only truly great terroir can produce. The vintage 2021 – cool, marked by challenges, yet mastered by experienced winemakers with patience and a deft touch – bestows upon the wine a vibrant freshness and structural elegance that marks it as a classical Burgundy.
Terroir & Origin
The Clos de Bèze lies in the heart of Gevrey-Chambertin on the Côte de Nuits and is privileged to be one of the few Grand Crus permitted to place its name before the celebrated Chambertin – a distinction that underscores the historical significance of this vineyard site. The soil of calcareous clay over oolitic limestone imparts the wine its characteristic mineral depth and structure. The cool 2021 vintage, shaped by a late spring and a fortunately dry autumn, favoured freshness, tension and finesse over mere abundance.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir – nowhere does this sensitive grape variety articulate itself more convincingly than on the Grand Cru sites of the Côte de Nuits. Bruno Clair works with artisanal care and minimalist philosophy: gentle hand-harvesting, careful extraction, and ageing in oak barrels that allows the terroir to speak without overstatement. The result is a wine that prioritises transparency over opulence – an approach that embodies the spirit of Burgundy in its purest form.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A wine of such complexity deserves an equally worthy table. Classically, it harmonises beautifully with roasted wild duck or venison loin with forest mushrooms. Boeuf Bourguignon in its finest handmade form is also a worthy companion. For those wishing to experience the wine in its pure essence, simply serve it with a mature Époisses or Comté.
