Dense ruby red with violet reflections and clear depth in the glass.
Nose
Dark berries such as cassis and blackberry, along with paprika, violet, a hint of sour cherry and a finely spiced herbal note.
Palate
Juicy dark fruit meets taut acidity and fine-grained tannins; spicy, slightly greenish notes provide tension, while the finish remains cool and long.
Character
Distinctive and racy – a Cabernet Franc with cool elegance rather than opulence, making the promise of old vines palpable in its structure and depth.
Pairing
Herb-crusted loin of lamb, beef goulash or mature hard cheese such as Bergkäse.
Notes
A rarity in the portfolio of white wine specialist Tement – old vines lend the Cabernet Franc grape concentration and an unusually fine, cool style for southern Styria.
Tasting note
Character
A red wine of refined stature, proving that Southern Styria can do more than Sauvignon Blanc. Old vines lend it depth and density, while the rather cool provenance provides taut acidity, fine-grained tannins and that cool aromatic profile which makes Cabernet Franc so appealing: dark berries, bell pepper freshness, a hint of herbs.
Terroir & Origin
The Tement estate in Ehrenhausen has placed Southern Styria firmly on the international wine map. Almost 100 hectares stretch across the dramatic steep vineyard sites on both sides of the Slovenian border – slopes whose calcareous soils give the wines tension and mineral sharpness. Since Manfred Tement took over the estate in 1976 with a mere three hectares, one of the most remarkable success stories in Austrian viticulture has unfolded here; today, his sons Armin and Stefan continue the work in the third generation.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Cabernet Franc – the Loire variety with peppermint, cassis and vegetal elegance – is a rarity in Styria and serves here as a deliberate calling card for the estate. In the cellar, restraint dominates at Tement: spontaneous fermentation, long ageing on the lees and the careful use of large wooden casks define the style. At 12.5% ABV and vinified dry, the wine remains slender, cool and structured – a red that relies on origin rather than opulence.
Food Pairings
Its herbal spice and lively acidity pair beautifully with rack of lamb with rosemary, duck breast or grilled peppers and aubergines. It also reveals a down-to-earth, uncomplicated side alongside mushroom dishes or a robust mountain cheese – a wine that truly comes into its own at the table.
