Wine Description for Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru AOC 2020 by Bruno Clair

Character
Bruno Clair’s Bonnes-Mares embodies the aristocratic side of Burgundian Pinot Noir. This Grand Cru vineyard site between Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis unites feminine elegance with masculine structure – a wine of extraordinary complexity and depth. The 2020 vintage, shaped by warmth and dryness, produced concentrated yet by no means heavy wines. Clair’s restrained approach to oak ageing allows the terroir to take centre stage.
Terroir & Origin
Bonnes-Mares extends across 15 hectares of stony limestone soil with a high clay content. Bruno Clair tends approximately 1.6 hectares in the Chambolle-Musigny district, where the soils are somewhat lighter and more calcareous than in the Morey section. This geological peculiarity lends the wine its characteristic tension between power and finesse. Domaine Clair has practised sustainable viticulture for years with minimal intervention to preserve the authenticity of the terroir. 2020 was a challenging year in Burgundy – early warmth, low yields – yet it produced wines of remarkable concentration and precision.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir finds one of its noblest expressions in Bonnes-Mares. Bruno Clair, renowned for his purist approach, favours extended maceration, moderate new oak and minimal fining. The wines age traditionally in French barriques, with the proportion of new oak deliberately restrained to avoid masking the fruit. At 13% alcohol, the 2020 shows remarkably measured character for the vintage – a testament to old vines and precise work in the vineyard. The dry style underscores the mineral backbone.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A wine of this calibre demands equally thoughtful cuisine: game birds such as pigeon or pheasant, venison loin with lingonberries, Coq au Vin or Bœuf Bourguignon. It also shines with truffle dishes and aged Époisses. The structure accommodates bold flavours, yet the elegance demands restraint with spices.
