Wine description for Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru AOC 2023 by Bruno Clair

Character
Bonnes-Mares ranks among the great, often underestimated Grand Crus of the Côte de Nuits – more powerful and structured than the neighbouring Chambolle-Musigny, yet possessed of a depth and seriousness that demands and rewards decades of ageing. Bruno Clair, one of the most reliable houses in Marsannay with roots deep in Burgundian tradition, brings artisanal precision to bear here, focusing on the expression of terroir – not on showmanship. The 2023 vintage was produced under warm, dry conditions that yielded ripe, concentrated wines with natural fullness, without sacrificing the characteristic tension of Burgundian Pinot Noir.
Terroir & Origin
The vineyard site Bonnes-Mares extends across the municipal boundaries of Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis – a geological peculiarity that lends the wine its distinctive duality: the floral elegance of Chambolle meets the mineral austerity and dark depth of Morey. The subsoil of brown limestone and clay gives the wine weight and texture, whilst the hillside location provides the necessary drainage. Bonnes-Mares is not a wine of seduction – it is a wine of conviction.
Grape variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir in Burgundy is not merely a grape variety – it is a medium through which soil, climate and human hand speak. Bruno Clair stands for traditional, careful oak ageing, where the wine is given time to develop its complexity without being dominated by new oak. The alcohol content of 13.0% vol. points to a successful balance – ripe, but not heavy. Residual sugar is minimal, the style dry and precise.
Food pairings
A wine of this calibre demands dishes with depth and dignity. Roasted pigeon or venison loin with wild mushrooms are classic companions. Equally recommended are Bœuf bourguignon in its artisanally perfected form or a mature Époisses to conclude a long evening’s dining. This Grand Cru unfolds at its best after several years of cellar rest – patience here is not a virtue, but a necessity.
