Negroamaro
The Salento peninsula at the southernmost tip of Apulia is the undisputed home of Negroamaro, a grape variety that absorbs the shimmering light and limestone-rich soils of the Italian heel deep within itself. Its name, most likely derived from the Latin and Greek word for black, already hints at the deeply dark, almost opaque colour of the wines. In the glass, Negroamaro unfolds a dense, balsamic spiciness reminiscent of ripe blackberries, black tea, dried plums and Mediterranean maquis. It is this subtle, bitter-herbal note on the finish that lends the wine a remarkable structure and freshness despite its natural richness. Just how vibrant and unadulterated this time-honoured variety can be interpreted is demonstrated by the estate Petracavallo, whose single-varietal Negroamaro brings the juicy, unvarnished wildness of Apulia into the glass with pulsating energy.
