Ehrenfelser
Also known as: Geisenheim 26-29
Ehrenfelser was long considered a Riesling-Silvaner cross – until DNA analyses in 2010 revealed that the second parent is the Alsatian variety Knipperlé. A correction that changes little: the variety crossed in Geisenheim in 1929 remains a footnote in German breeding, named after the Ehrenfels castle ruins above Rüdesheim.
Naturally, we don’t stock much of a variety with just one hundred hectares of vineyard area in Germany. Those wishing to try Ehrenfelser should look in the Rheingau – where the variety originated.
