Wine description for Sancerre rouge „La Noue“ AOC 2019 by Claude Riffault

Colour & Appearance
Luminous, dark velvety red with bright reflections – unusually intense for a Loire Pinot.
Nose
Mysterious and dark, this Sancerre Rouge presents itself: morello cherries, black cherries and redcurrant form an intense fruit profile, behind which sloe and greengage emerge. The chalky structure initially shows itself only shyly. Spice notes of red and black pepper as well as cinnamon dust meet ethereal elements: juniper berries, pine cones, a touch of lovage. Subtle hints of coffee and dark chocolate round off the complex aromatic spectrum – intense, but by no means heavy.
Palate
Straight as an arrow and with impressive breeding, this elegant Pinot Noir makes its way through. Almost bloody in character, threaded through with present yet pleasantly integrated acidity. The texture is silky, the mouth is virtually lined. Surprising: the fruit now shows itself lighter and more acidic – morello cherries become sour cherries. The mineral structure lends stability and that linearity which distinguishes great Loire Pinots.
Finish
Delicate and noticeably lighter than the nose would suggest. Juicy and moreish – a wine that invites you to take the next sip.
Terroir & Origin
The vines are rooted in the legendary Kimmeridge limestone soils of Sancerre, that fossil-bearing terroir which imparts the wine its characteristic minerality. Cultivation according to organic and biodynamic principles.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Pinot Noir, hand-harvested and aged for 18 months. Limited production of 10,630 bottles. The moderate alcohol content of 14% vol. remains well-integrated despite the intensity.
Food Pairing Recommendations
With roasted duck legs with red cabbage and bread dumplings, rabbit stew with celery, tomato and olive or also with grilled mushrooms with hummus and confit garlic – the wine masters both robust meat dishes and aromatic vegetarian cuisine.
Special Features
Claude Riffault succeeds with „La Noue“ in creating an unusually dark, mysterious Sancerre Rouge that combines the elegance of Pinot Noir with surprising depth – without losing any finesse.
